Go to www.howardforums.com they have an extensive disscussion going on at the moment. If your in high school I suggest getting this phone through Sprint because the EVDO data plan is cheaper. That is unless you want the black one or have money to burn.

You'd better use a belt-carrying case for it !

If I was able to get one - I would ! :) I'd love suck a Pocket PC, too.

So my opinion is - get it.

This phone makes the list of the top three worst products that I've ever owned.

The other two are the 1982 Oldsmobile diesel and the 1971 Triumph spitfire.

I am thinking of going back to the Verizon store and throwing it through their window.

I previouly owned two vx6600's which totally crapped out. The last was replaced under warranty with the vx 6700. It's hard to believe, but it's even worse than the 6600.

For instance, the 6600 had a button on the "phone" screen that called up the speed dial page. On the 6700, you've gotta touch a SMALL menu button, then a tiny "speed dial" item to pop up the speed dial screen. Not too speedy at all.

Once you make a call, the dial pad goes away and a useless screen appears.
If you want to use the dail pad for say a voice mail system or to dial someone in an automated system, you've gotta touch another tiny spot at the bottom to get the dialpad back.

The whole thing is quirkey and very unstable. The hard buttons are hard to use on purpose, but easy to set off by accident. Windows mobile 5 does not intergrate with ACT! contact management software unless you buy a seperate piece of software.

All in all, I gotta guess the people who designed this thing are on crack.

Buy anything else.

Speaking from personal experience - The 6700 is as fragile as a glass Christmas ornament. If you drop it 2 feet, it will be totalled. And it cannot be repaired for much less than the cost of a new one. It is obvious that the standard cases that snap over your belt are being sold to put your investment at risk. They are not fit for sale and are actually intended to eventually destroy your phone. Also, don't look to Verizon for help - their response was "We only sell em, we don't make em." If you buy a 6700, you need one of the aluminum cases and you will need to add a safety chain. Even better, Case makes a padded suitcase that may actually protect it to some degree.

I have had the phone for about 5 months and it was great when it was new. This phone has really takin a beating as well i have dropped it many times and only a small amount of cosmetic damage. The phone really has some great features such as internet explorer and pocket office. I do feel that the screen is kinda small. Anyway when i got the phone it was GREAT but now I have to exchange it because my touch screen just stopped workin on day! Also when you open the keyboard the screen takes to long to flip. The battery I find also dies extremly fast. I hope when i get a new phone all that will be fixed.

I have had a 6700 from verizon for several months. As an IT director, I have had to overcome several challenges with these phones as we have a number of them amongst our staff now. I thought I would share with you some things we have found out that cause you to have have some issues.

1) Memory expansion - the 64mb base memory is meager at best. You can expand the memory easily with a Mini-SD card. I have a 1gb card in mine. There are several issues with using an expansion card however. The 6700 will recoginze the card automatically, but each time it goes to 'hiberbnate' it will drop it's connection to the card. That creates a problem in that if you have any applications running that are accessing files on your card, those applications will not work properly again once you bring the 6700 out of hibernate again. The operating system is faulty in that it does not attempt to reconnect to the card, it only knows that connection was broken. For instance, if you are reading a book with MS reader and the phone hibernates on you, bring the phone back up will result in an error message statinng that the book is no longer accessable after you page ahead a few pages. In the MS reader instace of this issue, you will need to go to Settings/system tab/memory/running programs tab and stop the application. Then you can restart ms reader and establish a connection to the card again. This happens with most applications on the unit. The real issue here is that the connection to the memory card was lost but the phone kept the application itself running in memory. If the application was shutdown when it hibernated, the issue would go away, but you would have to restart the application each time. Closing applciation does not stop the application from running in memory. The only way to actually stop applications is to go to Settings/system tab/memory/running programs tab and stop the application. That is a faulty OS, no question about it.

2) Some applications cannot see the memory card at all. Such as if you want a nice mp3 ringtone, you are forced to place the ringtone file in a main memory location, not on your card. It will not work any other way. This severly limits the ringtones you can use or the number of tones you can have at any one time.

3) The buttons on the phone are poorly placed. The camera button in particular is really bad. You will nearly always inadvertantly press this button when trying to remove the phone from it's sync cradle. Then you have to wait 30 seconds for the software to start so you can shut it back down. Then of course you aren't really shutting it down as you can't without going to Settings/system tab/memory/running programs tab and stopping the application. This will cause the phone to run slower and slower over time until you pitch the phone at a concrete wall.

4) If you attempt to use the remote email sync via the cell phone data access line (in Verizon's case), the synce will work for several days perhaps, but then becomes unstable and will start to fail to sync. It will throw a number of very misleading messages that will suggest your settings are wrong. The trick to corecting these faults once they happen is to reset the phone by poking your stylus in the rest hole in the bottom left hand corener of the phone (to the left of the sync/power cable plug). This will reset the phone and keep your settings and resolve the mail synce issues in most all cases. The real issue here is that phone simply messes up the settings over time and has to be reset. All of the 6700 we have display this problem.

If anyone has found any resolutions to these issues that we have not, I would be very interested in hearing them.

Anyone know how to get the VX6700 to dial extra digits on calling? For example, I'd like to have it automatically dial my voicemail password once it connects. I've had multiple phones that have this feature in the past but I can't seem to figure out how to get it to work on this phone.

Thanks

go to start, phone, then menu, speed dials, highlight the default vm speed dial, then menu, edit. at the top add a p (lower case), or as many seconds as you want for 1 second then the vm password and that should do it for you. hope that helps

i am in the market for a smart phone, i have an axim x51v that finally started working great afetr i dwnlded the latest OS version (#12) from dell website. WM 5.0 i guess sucks. it took them 12 editions to fix all its defects.
well i want to combine the gadgets in one (phone PDA pager). it seems the vx 6700 is a poor choice based on the reviews i am reading. i heard the palm windows version also has many problems.
should i get the palm 650p or 700p

My XV6700 will 'lock up' often if I"m in an area where I'm connected using WiFi and then leave. IT seems to get hung trying to get to the wifi.

Only fix is poke the reset hole.

You are sooooo right about the camera button!

I have the xv6700 and have experienced problems with what an in store representative identified as bad speakers. The phone will go into what appears to be pause mode during a call. At times the interruption is brief but is becoming more frequent. The phone was replaced but the problem is occurring again. On some occassions, the phone will actually disconnect and automatically dial the last number.

Also, Microsoft does not appear to have an auto update feature for Windows mobile 5.0 or Internet Explorer for pocket PC on their website. Some of the websites I use for work are no longer accessible using IE for Pocket PC.

"My XV6700 will 'lock up' often if I"m in an area where I'm connected using WiFi and then leave. IT seems to get hung trying to get to the wifi."

Fixed with the newest Software release. UTstarcom's homepage to download the self extracting file.

"Ok so when i recieve messages i cant see who they are from how can i fix it?"

Do you sync with activesync often?
Its some kind of error that is attributed to activesync storing the contacts in outlook.
