Heylo, I'll get right down to the nuts and bolts here; last night a friend of mine pushed me into a pool (it was my birthday) when my NEW LG Dare was placed nicely in my left front pocket. As soon as I resurfaced I jumped out of the water to check the condition of the phone and it was a gonner. The screen began to flicker black & white, my speakers made these weird girl-fart sounds, it just went crazy.
The next day I drove to VZW store to see if I could get a replacement. What was "broken down" for me in what I think is the dumbest way to get a point across, the employee told me even if I were in a car crash and a droplet of water seeped into my phone it still would void the warranty.
So now I'm here to ask you to be the neutral 3rd party and help me out. Do I complain to LG about my phone? Do I ask the friend to cough up some money to at least help me buy a new phone? Do I wait it out to see in 3-5 days if it's dry and try to restart it?

I'm assuming you didn't have insurance?

so, just so we've got all the facts:
the phone was damaged by you (and your friend) in an unfortunate turn of events.
it was submersed in water, which, by design, is not its intended use.
now that we've got that out of the way, you should ask yourself the following questions:
1) how is the manufacturer responsible for the damage sustained to the equipment?
2) how is the carrier responsible for the damage sustained to the equipment?
here's the correct answer for both: They're NOT.
so contacting LG to "complain" about it will likely result in loud fits of laughter on the other end. and likewise, it'll probably be a good laugh for the guys at the store if you think they should replace it.
if i were to go out and buy a new Corvette, the proceed to drive it into a river, should i give GM a call and complain about it?
if you didn't have insurance on the acct, and don't have an upgrade available to you, you're going to get stuck with either full retail price, or picking up a used phone or some other option.

All right, alright! I was never aware that water damage made the basic insurance I had null. NEVER knew that.
But using your simile, I never intended on being pushed into the water. I called Verizon this morning and spoke with a real nice employee. A fresh-outta-the-box Dare would cost me $219. No laughing on their side btw. That's what happens when you complain and you're Jewish, see!

I am sorry guest that the other posters have provided no assistance for you and I'm glad that you called customer service and were helped out. In fact, if you don't have insurance, VZW has other options for you. It sounds like you were given the one year contract price on the phone, which is how we meet people halfway in these situations.

i get this question DAILY at my store. when you buy a phone of exceptionally high value why in the world would you not buy a basic insurance plan for $4.99? I mean if you ran your car into the river, would you honestly drive back to the dealer and be like "hey man i dunked it in the river, its under warranty so go ahead and fix that bad boy!" ????? a phone that retails for $409.99 needs insurance, whoever you got with customer care was beyond helpin you out! dont get mad at store employees for telling you how it is. slap your buddy for shoving you in the pool, hes the one to blame in this situation NOT THE PERSON ON THE SIDE OF THE COUNTER!

The discount option for the lost/stolen/damaged replacement is not an exception, its a policy. And it can be done in retail or customer service.

Just to let you know. I've purchased insurance after an accident like that, then filed it a few days later. I wasn't questioned at all! Some might say there is some waiting period, but nope.

normally insurance can only be placed on equipment within 30 days of purchase or replacement/repair. this is generally true with any carrier. and at least one BILLABLE call must be made before the insurance can be used due to the fact of fraud (you break your phone within 30 days, add insurance and attempt to make a claim) so I would not attempt to try this guys trick as it might not work.

I swear, what ever happened to personal responsibility in this country. Something happens to you that's your friends doing and immediately people start looking for hand outs from an uninvolved 3rd party. If your friend had any sense of responsibility they'd offer to buy you a new phone without you even asking and if they did you should have taken them up on it. In the end customers like me end up paying for stuff like this through price increases and so forth from the carrier, thanks!

I'm just curious, what does being jewish have to do with anything? When the CSR picked up did you annouce you were jewish so they pulled out their special jewish only pricing sheet? Please let us know so we can get in on this little trade secret.

Anyway, you're right sir. I didn't physically beat him, but we talked about the phone over a game of Madden '09 and it was then he handed me $162.92
So done deal there. Now I'm searching Craigslist for used phones...Moto Q9c is probably going to be my next phone. Thoughts, testimonials, ideas?

Hey man, I lent my friend my brand new Mustang (thing only had 500 miles on it) and he got ripped and totaled it. You think I ought to complain to Ford about it??

Well, a buddy of mine let me mess with his Q9 the other day. Personally I didn't care for it, but thats just me. It just doesn't seem all that user friendly to me. But as far as purchasing a phone off of craigslist, read the thread about purchasing a phone off of ebay (i think its in the general discussion or for sale forum) and stay true to those guidelines. Itd suck if you ended up getting a locked phone or one thats malfunctioning. I'd suggest going to a local VZW store first and play with some of the demo phones to see which you'll like better. Ask the reps there questions about them. etc.

Well, if you liked your LG Dare, then why would you accept less that what it would cost to replace it? I wish I had friends like you...I'd be breakin' sh*t all over your house... ;-P

I'm holding out for the Moto Q Napoleon...but only because I no longer desire the VZW UI limitations. I need a smarter device to work with.

Hah! Now that I have a 2nd chance the LG Dare isn't really worth the pricetag. I've been thinking about the Moto Napoleon since I came across it on Engadget. I hope it IS what dreams are made of b/c I'm thinking of holding out too, but I also don't have the luxury of the 2-year discount deal now that I recently used it on the Dare. The phone's retail price (when it comes out sometime this fall) is going to be around the 200s.
Soooo I'm freakin' happy I found a decent smartphone for $100 for the next 15 months.

My Opinion stay away for the Q series right now. They are basic entry level pdas that are not worth anything, I see more get returned then anything else (except the razr) DO NOT BUY.. You want a PDA go with a centro or a Blkberry

i dont know why people find it so difficult to realize that insurance on a phone is the same as any other insurance you may have. If you have an accident in your car regardless of fault you go through your insurance company. if you dont have insurance then you pay out of pocket. The phone has a warrenty on it that only covers manufacture defects. water is not included in that. Verizon isn't responsible for anything that happens when you have an accident.

cancel your verizon plan, pay the prorated etf and switch to another carrier and get the discounted price for a new phone. it will probably still be cheaper than paying verizon full price for a new phone. actually, you can get great prices on unlocked gsm phones and have a huge selection of excellent phones and go to either tmobile or att contract free.

You dont think the companies have thought of people doing this before? Do the math, ETF more than likely $175 if he just got the phone. Activation fee $35 plus whatever the inital cost of the phone is (even another dare would still cost $100+ w/ 2yr contract) Hell be shellin out more money than its even worth (especially since they already quoted a 1yr contract price for just over 200). I assume other carriers are very similar situations, and if he is happy with verizon why should he switch just for this reason. Unless you can get somone to wave the fees doing this will be much more of a headache and more costly than you would expect.

a device at the one year pricing is much less expensive that canceling and switching to another carrier, you are correct. Sad that your device went for a swim, I hear that happen all too often, second only to dropping it in the toilet. ;) If you upgrade, look at the Casio Exilim!! Stylish, packed with features, AND water resistant!! :)

Not to take this thread too far off-topic, but other than the water resistance and camera, I played around with the exilim and I couldnt stop laughing as I did. The outside LCD is increadibly small and looks rediculous, the phone feels like it was made out of the same plastic they make happy-meal toys, and it is rather bulky. I can only see people buying this phone for the camera, if its durrability and water resistance stick with the boulder (if you can find one now-a-days) or wait for the next casio. I know the exilim is shock/water resistant but I just cant believe it.
It sucks when a phone takes a dip. Its sad that some people have to learn the hard way to purchase the insurance (on that note it makes me mad asurion had to raise their fees/deductibles on advanced devices.) Unless people want to always have an emergency stash of white rice on them at all times just get the insurance.

I'm with you on the whole Asurion upping their deductible and premiums thing. That's just crap...honestly.
I had not yet had an opportunity to play with the Exilim yet....I am sorry to hear that it feels like a tinker toy. More and more phones lately are feeling as though they are made out of recycled toys, it is difficult to find one that doesn't feel like it will fall apart in your hand. The Boulder, and even the original Casio phone were a bit better at feeling somewhat substantial.
