could anyone please tell us how to use this feature. The 8 month old baby was chewing on the phone and now this feature is activated... Apparently the phone is adult proof because we cannot figure out to turn it off! Any help would be much appreciated!

I used a dry tooth brush to clean the data port at the bottom of the phone.
This fixed the car kit problem

yeah, drool or another conductible substance gets into the data port area and activates it

take the battery out, and clean the port out (located on the bottom of the phone)

I've fixed my moms for my little brother doing the same thing

what kind of IDIOT lets their kid suck on their phone??? car-kit is the result of some sort of liquid damage 90% of the time.

Obviously, the person insulting others is not a parent. I do not think any parent GIVES their toddler their cell phone to drool on, however it happens. I bought a new cheap toothbrush and cleaned the bottom out once it was dry and it fixed the problem immediately. Thanks for the suggestion!

I wouldnt worry too much about the insulting person. he or she identifies themselves well and sadly self projects. I have owned about ten mobile phones none of which have had this ridiculous problem. one brick phone I dropped in hot tubs literally 5 times and it didnt die until the 5th. I dont understand why people talk up LG equipment I have had nothing but trouble with their products

let me be more clear, because I couldve used more clairity on this. I fixed mine by turning it off. Placing a hair dryer 5 inches away blowing into the power/data port for 30 secs, flipped the phone over for another 30 secs.

I hope that helps somebody.

My daugher's vx8100 got a little damp, and went into "car kit mode." I tried re-setting, removing the battery, and a hair dryer. Thanks to Ken's posting, I used an air blower in the data port, and that finally worked!

GUYS.... I LOVE YOU ALL RIGHT NOW...
I followed ur advice on cleaning my cell phone port to get rid of the "CAR-KIT" problem, and it worked!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
(I actually found the same advice on another site, but didn't know where the port was, until a couple of u explained it on here...)
I just wiggled a pin in it, then blew into it...
and BAM! NO CAR-KIT :)!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

...I was just sorta glancing through, and saw something about sticking something metal in the charging port to bridge two of the connectors.... well that seemed to of worked... several times I did that and car kit mode would disapear from the screen...but when I would hit a button it would come back.... so the last time I got it off the screen,.. I shut the phone off, turned it back on ...and now it works.... I am sure if your phone actually got wet, you would obviously have to dry it,... but mine had not,.. I woke up...called my girl... went to work with it in my pocket, and the next time I went to use it, it said car kit mode.... too bad that I have already paid the $50 dollar deductable and have the new phone sitting here...ha ha

Dave.....
06-29-2006, 04:53 PM
oh yea,...just to clarify.... I did not file anything inside, the nail file was just what I saw sitting around that would fit in the charging port...............

I'm not sure which thing it was that worked, but I read the suggestion about the hair dryer, and I also read the suggestion on
http://forums.mobiledia.com/topic18548.html

about using a micro-screwdriver. I turned off the phone, took out the battery, and did both, first using the screwdriver to kind of scrape off any gunk, and then using the hairdryer. The phone seems to work properly still -- but that stupid car kit mode is off. Hooray!

i just stumbled upon this whole car kit conversation by accident... by seaching with google... and i tried the blow dryer... DIDN'T WORK... for me at least... then i went to the extream and took the whole phone apart and took the blow dryer to it again... NO LUCK... then i cleaned it with a toothbrush... still wouldn't get off car kit... then i read about the file technique... and when i took a closer look at the power port thingy i seen that one of the little things were bent out of place(which makes total sense cuz when it went on car kit, i was talking on my phone and i had it on the charger)... once i got in there and straightened it out (using nail sissors, only thing i could find... i guess it's a girl thing)... it came off car kit and i haven't had a problem since... thanks again guys you saved me 50 bucks... thats how much i was gonna have to pay to get it fixed somewhere else

My Phone also went into Car-Kit mode after my Baby Held it.
I had another problem: the internet didn't work, there was a message "Can't use internet while phone is plugged into a computer.

The Blow Dryer thing didn't help me, neither was the problem because the phone got wet, because I let it dry for 4 weeks.

I ended up fixing it the Car-Kit Problem, while playing around with the pins on the bottom with a Screw driver; if the Third pin from the right side touches metal it goes off Car-Kit mode. So I bent the pin out of place, so it touches the side metal casing.

This resolved only my Car-Kit Problem & not the Internet Problem.

Does any one have a solution for the internat problem.

Ok I have a LG PM 225. I'm having the same car-kit problem. I first noticed it after a rather sweaty day at work (the phone was in my pocket the whole day). I have tried the tooth brush, compressed air, hair dryer, and the screwdriver methods even though I'm not sure I did that last one right. It is still not working. Is there no hope? Is there anything else I can do?

P.S. I go through Sprint if that makes any difference

I have an LG 9800 telephone that got damp. I tried the hair dryer and resetting the telephone. The only thing that worked was the tin foil in the charging slot. This resets the telephone. When I removed the foil, it worked fine. I was hesitant at first, but thought, what the hey, it's broken anyway.
Still working after two weeks!

actually the best way to fix the [car kit mode] error, is to take it to your local Corp Verizon store and have them reflash the software. Its free of charge and your phone will work better!

OK this sounds completely stupid but I just read this online and did it literally 5 minutes ago and it worked. My phone's been in cat kit mode for like 3 weeks and I just found this out. Get a piece of aluminum foil and stick it in the place where you put the charger and just jiggle it around in there. It turned off the mode in like 15 seconds. AWESOME.

I tried EVERYTHING. My phone got wet and went into Car Kit mode. Let me show you something cool. With the display facing up on your phone, look into the charging port facing toward you. There is a hard black piece of plastic in the center with tiny gold pins along the top of the plastic. Now, look and the fourth pin counting in from the right side of charging port. They are very small and hard to count so look hard. If you use a very small flat screwdriver, press downward very lightly on the fourth pin counting in from the right. Do this with the phone open and keep looking at the display.....you should see the words "car kit" disappear and when I let up on the screwdriver, they came back. Turn the phone off and you will be able to bend the pins back if you are very careful. You know when you get it because "Car kit" dissappears. Good Luck, this worked for me!! Just don't break any pins off or your sol :)

Thank you all soo much for your posts! I did not get my phone wet but still had the dreaded "car kit" mode mysteriously kick in. Telus told me to take it in to be repaired and it would take 3-4 weeks plus $75 for a temp phone. Tried all the suggestions with no avail, then I used a paperclip "method" and gently pushed up on the right side, underneath the charger port. Voila!!! I was amazed it actually worked! My man you are a genius!! :o) Thank you!

Boy, am I thankful for this forum! I was completely perplexed when I had the Car Kit mode stuck on this morning. I also realize I would've liken gotten NOWHERE if I had called Verizon for help. This also worked for me I believe for the same reasons that the solution with the screwdriver works. but, having a penny in your phone and not being able to take it out and communicate with others is incredibly stupid. LG should not be allowed to make such crap and sell it to the general public, I will never buy another LG phone again. Lesson lived lesson learned (LG = worthless). thanks to all who posted.

The hairdryer thing works. Don't bother bending the pins all up. If you mess with these thin copper pins too much you will break them off and the thing those pins were designed to do won't ever work properly again. Just get the hairdryer, take out the battery, put it on low and blowdry the data port for like 30 seconds. It worked for me.

Hi All. This happened to me last night when I inadvertently dropped my phone into my garden that had just been soaked down (so it got wet). I read the various forums and first tried taking the battery out, cleaning the battery prongs with a q-tip and also taking a little bit of that q-tip and cleaning out the charger plug. Turned back on and same problems existed. I then re-did the whole process one more time and left in on my charger for a few hours. It kept displaying on and off a battery charging message but when I came back a couple hours later…..Walla, I powered it down and back on and it was gone. Anyway, try that for you too.

I have an LG VX5300 that got a little wet. I tried scrubbing the port on the bottom of the phone with a dry toothbrush and it didn't work. Neither did blow drying it. I finally starting messing with those pins inside the port using the file part of nail clippers and found that when the 2nd pin from the right touched the metal file, Car Kit mode turned off. However, it would immediately turn back on when I removed the file. I ended up pushing the 2nd pin up a little bit to touch the metal part inside the port. Car Kit mode is permanently off! Hope this helps.

This is just another example of the man trying to hold us down. They engineer these phones to fail after a certain amount of time or use. Then they just sit back and wait for us suckers to run to the nearest store to get a new phone. Thanks to everyone for the info.

After having read up on this and other like sites, I opened the back of my phone up and cleaned all the little contacts in the connection point with a little tiny brush and a very very small amount of vinegar. This stuff is great for removal of calcium deposits. A little air for drying and reassembled. Works like new. The Alltell geek was only interested in selling me a new phone. There ought to be a law.

9 times out of 10 this means that the phone has received some sort of water damage--just recently we have also come to the conclusion it can also be that the pins are touching or shorting out. Glad to hear you guys only had the pin problem and not water damage.

Thank you all for your postings! I went through each one trying everything that everyone suggested. Finally, the screwdriver suggestion worked. Right now I'm hoping it stays off. Is there any way to disable car kit from coming on at all once you have your phone back in working order?

Unregistered
09-24-2007, 08:45 AM
There is no way to disable car kit once your phone is in working order. Also, my phone which is an lg vx9800 with verizon, popped up with this 'CAR KIT' nonsense like....oh an hour ago. Now my phone was seriously water damaged a short while before i got it. But it was free to me and i dried it out and presto...no problems up until now except the M on the qwerty keyboard was stubborn...duh its above the headphone jack. So when it happened, I woke up my sister who ironically works for verizon in one of the stores. She said...in a sleepy daze "oh shit...your phones junk!" and i asked her why and she said it
was becuase of the water damage and there was nothing to do about it. So not even the employees know about these little fixes but when she wakes up bet you butt im telling her...

As far as what there is to try....

FIRST==NEVER TOUCH YOUR SCREWS ON YOUR PHONE....I KNOW FROM EXPERIENCE AND PAST WIRELESS EMPLOYMENT THAT THEY WILL KNOW AND IF YOU DO THEY WILL VOID WHATEVER WARRANTY YOU HAVE SO JUST DONT...IF YOU CANT DRY IT OUT WITH JUST THE BATTERY OFF THEN YOUR SCREWED!!!! THIS WAS FAIR WARNING...

Phone reset....there are a couple of way and i tried both...neither worked.

Paper clip/nail file/penny...TURN OFF YOUR PHONE AND TAKE THE BATTERY OFF!!!!!! WHY WOULD YOU STICK A METAL OBJECT INTO AN ELECTRONIC DEVICE YOU DUMMIES???===This could work depending on what you do...I used the end of a knife cuz its all i had....that plus something else worked.

hairdryer=could dry the phone out...

canned air/air compressor....i guess it could work if your phone is dusty...

I also found a site that suggested using ice melt liquid and suspending your phone over it over night in an enclosed container...why would you do that....i suggest not to try it

I used a piece of typing paper and folded it in half. I tried to straighten any bent prongs and then lightly rubbed the green corrosion with the paper and also cleaned all the areas on the battery connectors in the battery area. Also what you need to check is the screws in the back of your phone under the batter....those too could be corroded like mine and it is just never good to have corrosion in a phone. So these are the various ways to fix your problem....if this doesnt work still......your screwed.....your compny will just tell you to get a new phone when it is such a simple fix...hope this helps....sorry it was long

If your phone is stuck in the car kit mode check the charging/usb port on the bottom. Look at all the pins and make sure they are all lined up straight and in the black plastic support piece. If they are not turn the phone off and with a set of small electricians flat heads vary carfully bend the pins down some and then from underneath the plastic peice bend it up this will put them back in to proper alignment and the -car kit- should go away. This problem happens alot most people just take them back to the store and sometimes have to buy a new or refurbished phone. This will work on any LG phone whether its sprint or verizon.

I am currently sitting with my associate with a serious problem. The source of my frustration is a specific mode, car-kit in nature, that basically turns my telephone into a useless piece of shit. I can text message, but I hate text messages. In front of me I have an arsenal of toothbrushes, hair dryers, nail files, pennies, earpieces, tin foil and one key. After a day of seeking help from various Customer Service representatives and Radio Shack employees, I have taken it into my own hands. My associate, has succeeded in removing car kit mode for but a brief moment with a house key. The problem is: the key must remain in the charger. I repeat, the key MUST remain in the charger. Tin foil does not work. A toothbrush does not work. Do not try these methods, you will waste precious moments of your life, of which you may not have few remaining. All this aside, I believe there is a far greater question we need to ask ourselves. Rather than "how do I get my phone out of car kit mode?" Should we not ask "Why is Car Kit mode there in the first place?" Indeed, why would a phone have an optional mode that you cannot choose to activate, and once in this mode you cannot deactivate by any means other than shoving random metal objects into the complicated innards and circuitry of the device? If this is a joke, where's the punchline and who's laughing? If this is a conspiracy, who profits and who gets hoodwinked, and to whom do we address our collective grievance? Certainly not Customer Service, for there are certain things that they cannot answer because they are deliberately underinformed by their superiors. Certainly not the kid at Radio Shack; his name is Chauncey, his mind is weak, and his methods are of the lame. If you think you have this thing figured out, you, my friend have another thing coming. When in a mode not of ones choosing, the pathway out is beyond ones control.

WOW, Thank you so much for these posts. I was skeptical but I thought what the heck, I'll try these suggestions folks are posting regarding the car kit mode on my vx6100. I talked on it while in the bathtub, dumb, I know, and it must have gotten damp and went into car kit mode. After calling Verizon and having them tell me I need to replace the phone I did the magic tricks.....tooth brush on data port, then removed battery and rubbed tin foil over the connections and last but not least, shot it with the hair dryer. Oh yeah, and I prayed too!!! Turned phone back on and viola!! It worked. Too cool, thanks everyone.

I tried the aluminum foil and that works...but only when the foil is in the socket. As soon as I took it out the phone would go back to car kit.

What did work was putting a flat head screw driver into the charging slot and bending the gold pins back into their place. My phone when into car kit when the pins got bent in the charger.

Oh YES! This one worked for me! The toothbursh and Hairdryer thing didn't work!

Thanks big time. Stupid LG phones.

My phone just out of no where went on the car kit mode. It was really fustrating. But after reading your comments I decided to try the tin foil thing. First I turned it off then stuck the tin foil in and wiggled it around abit. Then I tried to turn it on. It didn't work! I was afraid I just wrecked it. But I took out the battery and when I turned it on the car kit wasn't there anymore. Thanks guys! The tips really helped. I was scared to do mess with it cause if it just makes it worse then they would say it was my fault and I would have to pay for it. But works Horray!
And by the way. I'm only 15 so if I can do it so can you. Good luck!

Hi everyone!
i know yall are in much grief about this -car kit- mode. I know i was! I tried basically everything that i could to get rid of it, but nothing woul work at all. But then i came around to Yahoo! Answers and someone said something about putting an old toothbrush in Rubbing Alcohol and try brushing in and out of the charging port. And it worked with ease!
If you try this, make sure you take the battery out first!

*the Rubbing Alcohol doesnt mess up electronics. It just "re-wires" i guess you could say.

Good Luck!

I work for a cell phone company US cellular and I am actually at work right now, tonight when I recieved a call from a customer she told me that her phone had gone into car kit mode. I have never heard of this before tonight. She told me she will be coming into our store tomorrow morning so i decided to do some research on how to fix her problem. Yeah i will fix it for free I don't charge for something like straighting a prong, or blowing some air into a phone. So were not all bad or maybe it's just US Cellular isn't bad lol. Hopefully tomorrow when i use this knowledge I just gained, I can help this lady out and she will leave a happy customer. ( without have to spend a dime.) thnx to all who gave advise on this forum.

Hello Peons!

Reason 4 Car-Kit mode: Liquid dmg 2 the phone - more importantly corrosion built up in the charging port. Or damage 2 the charging port [like bent pins]. Soemtimes you can rebend the pins and get it out, sometimes you can clean the port out and get it working again. Doesnt always work though.

Main Point: Car-Kit = U ****ed; No Warranty

Okay, my LG phone has gone on car kit a few times now (usually after my toddler drools on it).
I went to the Sprint store one time, and since I live in a smaller town, they could do nothing for me because the store does not have a tech support or any kind of customer service. (Pathetic, I know.)
What they could tell me, was this: "This particular LG phone model has a DEFECT. It goes into car kit mode sometimes for no reason at all. AND, they have had many complaints from customers on this model."
What I did: I used a PAPER CLIP to clean out the bottom port (where the car charger plugs in) and it instantly took it off car kit mode.
Sometimes in the past, it would correct itself, but this time, it wouldn't and the paper clip trick worked for me!
If you live in a small town and don't want to drive to the next town over to find a Verizon or Sprint store, I suggest trying with a paper clip!

Also, on another site Blade760 has posted some directions that have helped others:
#1) press soft key for menu
#2) then press 0
#3) you'll have a service code prompt, type 000000
#4) then type 2 (it should be field tests)
#5) then type 4 (clear errors)
#6) choose yes for clear errors
#7) press clear once
#icon_cool.gif type 8 (FCC test)
#9) type one (pcs)
#10) type one again (set channel) (mine shows 426 I don't know if theres a different channel for each phone.)
#11) press clear 3 times and the phone will reset.

when you get back into your phone the car kit mode should be gone and you will be able to hear your ringer

OK, so I had tried all the myriad other paperclips/foil/etc. and they only worked for a second then "car kit" came back. The post about using the phone while the charger was in put a lightbulb on for me. I plugged the charger back in to the bottom while the phone was on and then GENTLY bent the charger down. It worked! My guess is that it had the effect of straightening out all the pins. My hubby also had this happen but was quick to go to Verizon where they made him buy another phone because they said his was "water damaged". Well....I tried the same procedure on his "water damaged" phone and it's just fine now. Wow, what a waste of money that we didn't have to spare! Hey Verizon..Can you Hear me NOW!!!?????!!!

Same problem ... "car kit" The VZW folks tried to dry it out to no avail; taking battery out did not work; going through error reset did not work.
