I don't see the type S on the Verizon web site any more? July 4th release date? I'm holding out for the Boulder, but my RAZR is not going to hold on much longer.

July 4th won't happen. We'd have some info about it by now if that were the case. No one at my store, at least, has any idea when it'll be released

Anyone know what the quality of this phone is like (based on previous models)? Apart from the ruggedness, how does the call quality or general reliability compare to something like an LG?

I own a Type V, the first of this line. Its firmware problems have driven me crazy at times; however, it takes all sorts of abuse and still works. I will miss the 2.0MP camera. My niece also owns a Type V; she is on a rowing team, and dropped it in a cove leading out to the Hudson River on a Thursday morning, and a teammate heard the phone's alarm from under two feet of water the next morning. Yup, she still has it.

"releases are NEVER a surprise. There is always some notice for us."
We'll know about the phones, but they don't usually nail down a definite date, or they announce it and drop it on the techs. DOH!!!

It's in fact Mil Spec 810f like usual. Its in a smaller package minus that plastic bumper filigree crap. (BLECGH!!) Biggest Issues I had with it where the same issues with the C211 where the speakerphone is abnormally quiet for the clientel that is going to be purchasing it. (Construction) But I only had a test phone, so it may change. (Quiet enough where someone elses bowl movements almost overtone it!! lol, j/k.) Same stiff battery latch, SCHWEET. NO FRIGGIN LATENCY, it was awesome, I can't tell you where the guys were when i was testing it, but they were in different states, and as soon as i pressed the button, they got it, friggin sweet!! Camera Does decently indoors, didnt get to test it outdoors. Rumor was that it was supposed to have a card slot, but the unit I messed with I only got like frigging 4 minutes in heaven, Played with what I thought was important, manual programming, looking at what modes were available, speaker volume, ringer volume, and of course PTT!! I'm waiting for the final to come out before I make my Determinations!!
It looks like a good handset, I'll tell you if its worth it when the price point is announced. Overall the PTT worked AMAZINGLY!! The call quality was really good, better than the C511, on par with the C211. (Although it was a test model, so I won't swear to it!!!)

Even with the newer model, The V was still my FAVORITE!! I don't care if it had a memory card slot or not. That camera ROCKED!!! Even with its slight Performance issues. (Aided if you change the slot cycle index to 1 instead of 2, still no guarantee because the radio is so shielded by that honking outer casing!! Which I think has something to do with it, but thats just me, and dont screw with it because it affects the durability of the device!!) The new one definitely felt rugged as the others, but they wouldn't let me jam it against the concrete or anything, so I couldn't test it for sure!!! hehe.

This is true, many times in our "Tech Talk" we do hear the release dates before sales/CS. Not always true, but often enough

I am particularly interested in the quality of the display?

Got mine too. SWEET! Display is fine for what it is, a work phone. If you want a top notch display get another phone. If you want a kick a$$ work phone, the Boulder is what you are looking for!

Yeah "people love it" when they pick it up and feel it, but talking on it is another issue entirely. It sounds awful, tinny and muffled all at once, to the point that calls are brief because you can't understand the other person, and they get tired of having to repeat themselves.
And the battery -- whoa -- what a joke! If this is the phone for outdoorsmen, boaters, hikers, campers, etc., then either bring an infintely long extension cord out into the woods or a generator on your boat. First full charge lasted less than 16 hours with minimal usage. Even my two-plus-year-old LG VX8300 it replaced -- held together by duct tape and on its original batter -- keeps up with this piece of junk.
Sorry, but Verizon is going to have to offer something to the thousands of people who will be promptly returning this major disappointment.

This phone rocks! Ear piece volume is awesome, very loud, I had to turn it down. Everyone I've talked to in the past couple weeks had no problem understanding me! This phone is solid! Battery life is just fine! I can go a couple days before charging it! Look, it is a no frills work phone. If you like the little girl phones this is not the phone for you! If you send text messages back and forth all day this is not the phone for you! Dude, you can dunk it in water and nothing will happen to it what else can you ask for! This is a true man's phone! I have no complaints! If you are a girly man, get a pink RAZR! If you are a real man this phone is for you.
